Description

The Kanban Simulation Game is one of the top simulation games and brings your team together to learn by playing a Lean Pull System Game. It uses standard building blocks, which are sold separately, as the Kanban building blocks kit.

This simulation is supported by the Kanban Presentation. We strongly recommend that they are used together during the training session, because this way your team can experience the true power of what they’ve learned.

Briefly, a Kanban system involves a method of cascading production and delivery instructions from downstream to upstream activities in which nothing is produced by the upstream supplier until the downstream customer signals a need.

A key element of Lean Pull Systems, Kanban is a Japanese word meaning display card or instruction card and it is used as a tool of improvement within the “PULL” system by signaling upstream production.

Just learning the concepts is not enough to feel a deep sense of understanding. By actively experimenting and applying what they’ve learned, in the safe environment of the classroom, yet being able to make mistakes and truly learn what works and what not, the team engages in a new way of Lean thinking that will be very beneficial at the moment when they will actually perform the workshop and put in practice, in the real workplace, what they’ve learned.

Case Study

Company Name: Space Robotics Inc.

  • Traditional manufacturing set-up
  • Produces two types of robots, Model N (narrow waist)and Model W (wide waist)
  • Has large raw material and work in process inventories
  • Needs to deliver 2 robots per day, type varies
  • Cannot deliver on time, therefore expediting
  • Has negotiated a new contract and it must improve their operations to meet the customer requirement

How will they manage to change their way of thinking and improve their operational effectiveness?

There’s one way to discover this: Try out the Kanban Game!

Objectives

The Kanban Game is designed for groups of 6-8 people. If you have more players, just buy more Mega Bloks (micro blocks) or Lego pieces and use the same instructions. The Kanban Simulation can be seen as a competition between teams.

The purpose of the game is to prove the benefits of using the Kanban technique to analyze the current constraints and to increase the efficiencies in the process.

By playing two rounds (assembling robots from Lego, according to the current process and after implementing Kanban) we will demonstrate how we can connect the operations and pull material from previous operation, decreasing the work-in-process.

Agenda

  • Introduction of the Kanban game
  • Play Round 1
  • Apply the In-Process Kanban technique (Shadow Boards, Min/Max levels)
  • Play Round 2
  • Apply the Withdrawal/Production Kanban technique
  • Play Round 3
  • Discussions based on Results

Resources Include

  • Kanban Simulation (slides)
  • Trainer Manual (footnotes that explain each slide)
  • Trainee Manual (presentation slides and space for notes)
  • Cell layout
  • Operator Work Instructions

Please note: If you already have building blocks or intend to purchase the blocks yourself, please click here for a list of parts required.

The simulation game comes as a downloadable zip file, available upon payment. Includes uneditable PDF and PowerPoint (2007-10) versions of presentation and supporting PDF files.

Product Version Restrictions

Product Versions

Due to recent changes in the copyright agreements with many of our third party partners in the development of the materials we sell on this site we are going to be adding new versions of our presentations, and simulation games, which will allow editing to different degrees.

The first items to come out will allow Text Edits only, these will be followed by more updated and redesigned materials that will allow other items than just the text to be edited. As they become available more detailed description of the rights and options accompanying each will be added here.

Current Version Descriptions and Rights

Non-edit Versions there is no direct way to edit the text or any other feature of the materials. You can only use the materials in two ways; as is which includes the right to eliminate any slides you wish from the presentation or simulation game (though it would be less than helpful to do so with the games; and secondly you can use our materials and add slides of your own design to them, you may not however imply that those slides are the result of work conducted by ELSE Inc. These versions will remain as our standard base version.

Text Edit Versions with these versions you may translate, or adjust the materials to suit your needs, however you cannot redesign them in any way to become a totally unrelated product. You must also clearly indicate what you have changed in the slides and to what extent the material is no longer the material produced by ELSE Inc. No images may be extracted or used for any purpose other than one strictly related to what they are used for in the presentation or simulation we created. Additional materials added by you allow you to add your copyright to the material as well as your logo’s only were your materials are included. Under no circumstance should and ELSE Inc. logo, statement or footer be removed from the materials.

More versions will be add soon.
