Description

The Lean Ball Game is a Lean simulation that uses three tennis balls for a team of 6-8 people and is used to introduce your team to the concept of Lean Manufacturing.

This simulation is supported by the Fundamentals of Lean Manufacturing Presentation. We strongly recommend that they are used together during the training session, because this way your team can experience the true power of what they’ve learned.

Briefly, Lean Manufacturing is:

  • A philosophy and a long-term strategy that aligns everything in the business to deliver increasing VALUE to the customer
  • It involves:
  • People
  • Systems / Processes
  • Waste and Deficiencies elimination

Case Study:

  • The process involves a group of three tennis balls that have to go through a process involving as many operations as people. The issue is that they have a large percentage of scrap and rejects, based on the number of times the balls are dropped, and the lead time (the processing time) is too long.

How will they manage to change their way of thinking and improve their operational effectiveness?

There’s one way to discover this: Get in the game!

There’s one way to discover this: Get in the game!

Objectives

The game is designed for groups of 6-8 people. If you have more players, just buy more sets of 3 tennis ball and use the same instructions. It can be seen as a competition between teams.

The purpose of the game is to prove the benefits of:

  • To show why the truly Lean organizations consider all their staff as their most valuable resource.
  • This is a simple game, but playing reveals the problems in typical batch production operations, versus Lean Flow operations.

By playing four rounds, we will demonstrate how we can decrease the lead time and increase quality while using the same number of people

Agenda

  • Introduce the Game
  • Play Round 1 – Batch Production
  • Change Rules and Practice
  • Play Round 2 – Transition to Lean – Bring Operations Closer
  • Change Rules and Practice
  • Play Round 3 – Quality at the Source

  • Play Round 4 – One-piece flow

Resources Include

  • The Lean Ball Game (slides)
  • Trainer Manual (footnotes that explain each slide)
  • Trainee Manual (presentation slides and space for notes)

Please note: All you need is a few set of three tennis balls per group.

Product Version Restrictions

Product Versions

Due to recent changes in the copyright agreements with many of our third party partners in the development of the materials we sell on this site we are going to be adding new versions of our presentations, and simulation games, which will allow editing to different degrees.

The first items to come out will allow Text Edits only, these will be followed by more updated and redesigned materials that will allow other items than just the text to be edited. As they become available more detailed description of the rights and options accompanying each will be added here.

Current Version Descriptions and Rights

Non-edit Versions there is no direct way to edit the text or any other feature of the materials. You can only use the materials in two ways; as is which includes the right to eliminate any slides you wish from the presentation or simulation game (though it would be less than helpful to do so with the games; and secondly you can use our materials and add slides of your own design to them, you may not however imply that those slides are the result of work conducted by ELSE Inc. These versions will remain as our standard base version.

Text Edit Versions with these versions you may translate, or adjust the materials to suit your needs, however you cannot redesign them in any way to become a totally unrelated product. You must also clearly indicate what you have changed in the slides and to what extent the material is no longer the material produced by ELSE Inc. No images may be extracted or used for any purpose other than one strictly related to what they are used for in the presentation or simulation we created. Additional materials added by you allow you to add your copyright to the material as well as your logo’s only were your materials are included. Under no circumstance should and ELSE Inc. logo, statement or footer be removed from the materials.

More versions will be add soon.
